My $900 fridge died after 2 years, repair guy said it's 'disposable'

Last Tuesday my compressor gave out, right in the middle of a heat wave in Phoenix. The repair guy took one look and said "you don't fix these anymore, you replace them." Two years, that's it. I paid $900 for a fridge that's built to be garbage. He showed me the failed part, cheap plastic fittings and a compressor that's basically a toy. I ended up buying a used one from a scratch-and-dent place for $350 that's 15 years old and still running cold. Why are we paying premium prices for appliances that are designed to fail on purpose? Has anyone else fought this battle with a major appliance and found a brand that actually still builds stuff to last? I'm about to start checking manufacturing dates on everything before I buy.

Ugh, everything's built to die right after the warranty now, not just fridges.
