Was sure the old guy at the flea market in Tulsa was selling me junk, then I tried his coal rake
Paid $8 for a hand-forged rake that looked like it had been sitting in a puddle for a decade, and I figured it was a waste. Used it on my forge last week and the offset tines clean clinker out of the firepot twice as fast as the $45 one I bought online. Anybody else got a beat-up tool that turned out to be the real deal?
My track record with flea market tools is so bad that my wife calls my garage the museum of bad decisions. But every now and then you hit one like that rake, where the rust was just hiding the good stuff. Guess the old timers knew what they were doing before everything got stamped out in a factory.
