I thought those $30 induction forge units were junk, then a guy in Ohio showed me his setup
I've been coal forging since I was 19, so when a buddy kept talking about his little induction setup I just smiled and nodded. Then last spring I drove out to his shop near Dayton and watched him heat a 3/4 inch bar to orange in about 8 seconds, no blower, no smoke, no clinker. I ran back home and got the same unit for $30 on sale, and I've used it for small scroll work and tong blanks ever since. It won't replace my coal forge for bigger stuff or damascus, but for quick jobs in the garage when I don't want to fire everything up it's honestly handy. The part that got me was how clean the shop stayed, since I usually spend 20 minutes sweeping coal dust after a session. Anyone else running one of these little units, and what did you figure out it's actually good for?
