I finally compared full marathons of two crime procedurals back to back and one was way better executed

Binged both Criminal Minds and Law & Order SVU over two months and Criminal Minds kept me hooked through 12 seasons while SVU started feeling like the same episode on repeat around season 8 - has anyone else noticed that drop-off with long running shows?

Man Criminal Minds really knew how to keep things fresh for so long, that's rare.

Did they rotate the writing team or something? I rewatched the whole series last year and the change ups really worked for me. The early seasons with Mandy Patinkin had a darker feel then it shifted when they added more team members like Blake and Lewis. Different profilers brought their own style and the cases never got stale. I think keeping the core team but shuffling the lineup was the smart move.
