The barista who remembered my old job before I did
Walked into the coffee spot near my new apartment and the barista goes 'still doing the night audit?' I quit that job 8 months ago. It hit me that no one from my old life really knows me anymore, just that routine. Has anyone else had a stranger remember a version of you that you already left behind?

35 years driving a cab taught me people are just their routines. But this one regular, always got the same coffee, same time. Then one day he shows up with a cane, and I asked about his knee. He looked at me confused, said he'd been walking with that limp for six months. I knew his body better than he did. That changed my view. We're just mirrors for each other's past, even when we're not looking.
