Unpopular opinion: stop pushing full cable housing replacement when the inner wire is the real problem
Last week I had a customer's cross bike on the stand with shifting that felt like dragging a rope through wet sand, and I had to pick between swapping the whole housing set or just running a new inner wire through the old housing. I went with the cheap route first, new stainless inner only, about 12 minutes and $4 in parts, and the shifting came back crisp through all 11 gears. The old housing was still clean inside, no rust, no kinks, so the gunked up wire was doing all the damage. I've now done this on four bikes in the past month and only one actually needed full housing. Has anyone else been finding that the housing gets blamed way more than it deserves?
