A kid in Denver handed me his cracked carbon frame and asked if it was 'still good,' and I lied to his face
He was maybe 19, dropped it on a curb at Cheesman Park, and the down tube had a crack I could fit a #2 pencil tip into. I told him it was rideable for now because I didn't want to watch him cry in my shop, but I still think about it every time someone asks me to 'just take a quick look.' Do you all give the straight answer or the nice one when it's a kid with no money for a new frame?
The "I didn't want to watch him cry in my shop" part hit me hard because I have done the exact same thing and then spent the whole drive home feeling like a coward. My go to line is "it will get you home today" which is technically true and also a total cop out, so honestly I am the last person who should hand out ethics advice here. Last time a college kid brought me a cracked frame I gave him the nice answer and then felt sick for a week, so now I just tell them straight and offer to look for a used frame in their size. It stings for five minutes but a broken face stings a whole lot longer.
