Vent: My checkout line chats fuel my secret poetry hobby

More shoppers lately spill their guts to me while I bag their groceries. I jot down bits in a notebook after my shift and turn them into simple poems. Is it weird that my job now feeds my creative side so much?

Actually, that's pretty creepy if you're writing down what people say without telling them. Those little chats are private moments, not free material for your hobby. It's a big trust issue when someone thinks they're just making small talk at the register, but really they're being watched for lines you can steal. Your job gives you a chance to listen, but that doesn't mean you should take their words. It feels sneaky and wrong. You're using people's real lives for your own art without their okay.

Elliot's point about private moments not being free material is spot on. My friend used to jot down cafe customer chats for her writing too, but it felt wrong taking words straight. She started mixing up the stories and now her work feels honest without using real people.

Totally normal, great material hides in plain sight.
