Vent: I was giving customers way too much change back for months

I was working the drive-thru window at my coffee shop in Tempe. A regular came through and paid for a $4.75 latte with a twenty. I handed her back a ten, a five, and a quarter without thinking. She just looked at the money and said, 'Honey, you're giving me way too much back, you'll be short.' I was doing the math wrong in my head the whole time. Has anyone else had a simple mistake like that they didn't catch for way too long?

My buddy worked at a gas station. He was giving back change for a ten when they paid with a five. Did it for weeks. The drawer was always short but they blamed it on counterfeit bills at first. Turns out he just had a total brain glitch with the math. Felt like an idiot when the manager finally watched him on camera. Some mistakes just get stuck in your head.

Oh man... I started double-checking every single transaction out loud after I did something similar.
