Tried the 'kill them with kindness' thing on a screaming customer, now they follow me around

I work at a coffee cart in Portland and last Tuesday this guy went off because his oat milk latte was 10 cents more than yesterday. I remember thinking, fine, let's test the whole patience approach, so I just smiled and offered a free shot of espresso. He stopped mid-rant, took the drink, and now he comes by every morning asking if I'm 'the nice one' and it's kind of exhausting. Does that method actually work long term, or did I just create a regular I can't shake?
