The Tuesday that every refund request actually had a receipt
I work the customer service counter at a hardware store in Portland. Last Tuesday was one of those days where everything lined up weird. Four people came in to return things and every single one of them had their receipt. One guy even had the original credit card and the box with all the screws. I processed all four returns in under 20 minutes without a single manager override. Normally I spend half my shift explaining why we can't take back a half-empty can of paint without proof of purchase. Not that day though. It was so quiet I actually got to restock the screws alphabetically before lunch. Has anyone else had a shift where the universe just handed you a break for once?

Oh man, that is a beautiful thing when it happens! I learned the hard way that you gotta enjoy those quiet moments because they never last. Here's the thing about returns - if you train yourself to keep a little stash of those rare perfect receipts or credit card slips in a safe spot (like a binder behind the counter), you can use them as examples when someone else gives you a hard time about store policy. It also helps to start every return with a friendly "let me see what we can do" and then immediately ask for the receipt before they can hand you a story. That one guy with the box full of screws is basically a unicorn - I'd probably frame that receipt and hang it up as a good luck charm. Keep riding that wave of organization, but don't expect it to happen again until maybe the next blue moon.

Hold on, 41 returns in one shift? At my store that would be a slow Tuesday but we have way fewer people coming through. You mentioned the customer with the original credit card and the box with all the screws. That part stands out to me because that never happens. Usually those are the ones who lost the receipt three years ago and want cash back. Makes you wonder if someone up there was messing with the system or if you just got the one customer who actually follows directions. Maybe that Tuesday was a sign that the world does want things to be organized for once.
