The customer who yelled at me over a 50 cent coupon made me stop suggesting them

I work the register at a grocery store in Dayton. Last Tuesday this lady comes through with a cart full of stuff, and I see she has a coupon that expired the day before. I point it out nicely, and she starts screaming about false advertising and demands I call the manager. Manager comes over, says sorry but we can't take it. She throws the coupon at me and leaves her cart in the aisle. Since then I don't mention coupons unless someone asks first. I'd rather miss a discount than get yelled at again. Has anyone else just stopped giving helpful info because of one bad customer?

Oh man, I feel this so hard. I used to work at a hardware store and would walk people straight to the item they needed, even if it meant saving them two bucks on a different brand. Then one guy screamed at me for ten minutes because I suggested a cheaper caulk that he said made his bathroom smell like rotten eggs. Now I just point at the aisle and say "it's over there" and let them figure it out themselves. It's not worth the headache, and honestly, if someone asks me straight up if a coupon works or if there's a sale, I'll still tell them, but I'm never walking them through the whole process again. The quiet customers who appreciate it suffer, but I'd rather deal with a missed discount than another meltdown over something I didn't control. You're not wrong for pulling back, your job shouldn't be a punching bag.
