That laundry room redo where the customer almost burned his house down

I showed up to fix a rattling noise in a heating system. The homeowner decided to reroute a duct himself during a basement remodel. He used the wrong type of tubing and secured it with zip ties. It was sagging and crushed in two spots, blocking all airflow. I explained how that could overheat the unit and start a fire. He got upset about the repair cost, but ignoring basic safety is just stupid. Pay for a professional install so you don't risk your whole home.

Check your home insurance policy fine print (seriously, it's boring but important). They often have clauses that void coverage if you cause damage through unpermitted or not-to-code renovations. So that zip-tie duct job wouldn't just risk a fire, it could mean you owe hundreds of thousands out of pocket after one. That's a financial bomb most DIYers never see coming.

A guy I know tried to save cash by wiring his own garage lights. He crossed the wires and caused a small electrical fire in the wall. Smoke poured out before he killed the power, and the drywall was charred. His wife made him call an electrician who found three other code violations. They spent more fixing it than a pro would have charged upfront. Sometimes that DIY confidence is just a pricey accident waiting to happen.

Yeah, this DIY culture has people skipping the basic safety checks all the time. It's not just saving money, it's betting your house on a youtube video.
