Is it worth paying $200 for a professional carpet cleaner or just renting a $40 machine?

I spent $300 on a rug doctor rental and cleaning supplies last weekend in Phoenix, and the stains barely lifted on my rental's shag carpet. Has anyone else tried both and found one actually works better?

Honestly, I feel your pain on that rug doctor rental. I tried one on my old apartment's high-pile carpet and it just pushed the stains around. What finally worked for me was hiring a guy with a truck-mounted machine, it was $180 but actually pulled the dirt out and my carpets looked new again. Tbh, the big machines make a way bigger difference on plush carpets than any bissell rental can.

oh yeah @christopher_sullivan, totally agree with you on that. I had the same issue with a spot cleaner and it just smeared everything around. A good truck mount really is night and day, especially on those thicker carpets.
