I used to just nod along when my kid's teacher pushed the whole "learning styles" thing, now I hand out actual studies at conferences
For 2 years I sat through parent teacher conferences in my town nodding while they told me my son was a "visual learner" and that's why he couldn't read, which I later found out has been debunked in basically every controlled study since the 70s. After the third conference I printed out a meta analysis from 2019 and asked for a meeting with the principal, and now 4 other parents have asked me for copies. Has anyone else pushed back on this at their school, and did it actually change anything or did you just become the annoying parent?
Good for you for actually doing something about it instead of just complaining at pickup like the rest of us. My daughter's school had the same thing going on and I brought in a couple of articles too, and while the teachers got defensive at first, two of them quietly stopped using that language by the next year. You're probably the annoying parent now, but annoying parents are the only ones who ever get anything changed.
