Card declined at a diner last week and the cashier held up the whole line

I was grabbing breakfast at this spot in Pittsburgh called Del's, $12.50 for eggs and toast. My debit card got flagged by my bank as fraud because I never use it there, then the cashier starts arguing with me like I'm the one who broke the machine. I had to call the bank on speakerphone while 8 people behind me stared daggers. Do you guys side with the merchant who checks every card or the customer who just wants to pay and leave?

Stared daggers" over a $12.50 breakfast sounds a little dramatic honestly.

Saw a video online about how some servers at diners get really bent out of shape over small bills, guess they figure the tip is gonna be tiny. Not saying it's right or wrong but I've heard stories from people who worked breakfast shifts that $12.50 checks usually mean $1.50 tips if you're lucky. Still, staring someone down like they stole your car over some eggs and toast is a bit much. Probably should just move on with your day instead of making a scene over pocket change.

Wait, did I miss something or are we really talking about someone giving the death stare over bacon and eggs? I read somewhere that some servers actually track their table totals mentally and decide if it's worth their time. Like if the check is under $15, they figure the tip won't cover their effort and they get salty about it. But honestly, staring someone down over a few bucks is just bad customer service, period.
