Chose between my grandma's lard crust recipe and a $22 butter block for the county fair pie, and the judges picked wrong
I had 6 hours before the Delaware County fair entry deadline and had to pick between grandma's lard crust she wrote on an index card in 1974 or a fancy European butter block I grabbed at the store for $22. I went with the butter because I figured the judges would like the flakier layers, and I got 4th place while the blue ribbon went to a lady who used plain shortening from a tub. Has anyone else ditched a family recipe for something store bought and regretted it, or is it just me?
