Vent: Why I picked the diner over the fancy restaurant for a first date

Everyone told me to take her to this new Italian spot in Portland that costs $60 a plate, but I chose the old diner on 3rd Street instead. We split a $12 stack of pancakes and she ended up loving that the waitress called her 'hon' and didn't rush us out at 9 PM. The whole date lasted 3 hours and we actually talked, not just sat there being fancy. Has anyone else had a simple date that worked way better than a pricey one?

The "waitress called her 'hon'" part got me. I had a first date once at this beat-up diner where the coffee cup had a lipstick stain from the last customer. The waitress brought me the wrong order twice but she laughed every time. We ended up staying two hours just talking about how she learned to cook from her grandma. Sometimes a place feels real and that's better than any fancy menu. The sticky floor and burnt coffee smell made it memorable somehow.

Oh wow, that's exactly what I'm talking about! People get so hung up on fancy places but the real magic is when a spot has soul. That waitress sounds like a character, and those are the people who make a meal memorable. Lipstick on a coffee cup is gross but honestly that's the kind of thing you laugh about later. Burnt coffee and sticky floors are way better than some stuffy place where you're scared to touch anything. Those diners have heart!
