Used to plan every mile of a 5 day trip, now I leave 2 days open and just see where the trail takes me
I used to map out every single campsite and water source before I even left the house. Printed maps, highlighters, the whole deal. But last summer on the Olympic Peninsula I got rained out of my planned route and had to wing it for 3 days. Turned out to be the best part of the whole trip. Now I pick a general area and a couple must-see spots, then let the weather and my energy decide the rest. Has anyone else shifted from overplanning to a looser style? How do you handle food resupply when you don't know your exact path?

Looser style works way better for me too. Now I just pack extra dehydrated meals and keep a list of general store locations along my rough route, then hit them when I'm running low. That rained-out detour taught me the best spots are often the ones you never planned to see.

@patb12 is acting like getting rained out was some kind of spiritual awakening. It rained for 3 days, you didn't discover the meaning of life. I still plan my campsites and water stops, just not down to the hour. Ending up at a random spot because you got tired or the weather shifted is fine, but pretending like you're some free spirited trail guru for skipping a few waypoints is a bit much. Food resupply is easy, just hit a gas station when you're hungry.
