Question about bailing on the Eagle Rock loop after 9 miles when my filter clogged
Went out to the Ouachita last weekend to do the Eagle Rock loop over 3 days, and about 9 miles in my water filter just quit pulling. The thing had maybe 15 trips on it. I had a backup squeeze bag but that one started leaking at the seam, so I was down to boiling, which meant a fire, which meant I was burning time I did not have with storms rolling in. I ended up walking back out to the trailhead and driving home 4 hours, tail between my legs. Part of me says I did the smart thing and part of me says I panicked over a solvable problem. So here is the argument I keep having with myself. Side A: a clogged filter is a gear issue, not a safety issue, and you can always boil or find a clear stream, so turning around early is soft. Side B: once your treatment plan fails twice in a row, that is the trail telling you the trip is over, and pressing on solo is how people get in trouble. I am honestly not sure which camp I land in. What do you all do when a filter dies mid trip, push through or pack it out?
