Just read that the official John Muir Trail permit success rate is under 30% for some start dates
Honestly, I found that stat on the PCTA website and it makes me think I should just plan a different Sierra route for next year, has anyone else had to scrap a dream trip because of the permit lottery?

Yeah, that permit lottery is a real gut punch sometimes.

Scrap a dream trip" seems a bit much. Just pick a less popular trailhead or go later in the season.

Switched to a walk-up permit at the Inyo office and got on trail the next morning. The ranger told me mid-week starts have way better odds. Sometimes you just need a flexible plan.
