I chose to skip my cousin's wedding after he said some pretty rough things about my wife.

My family is still upset with me six months later, but I stand by putting my marriage first, even if it means missing a big event. Has anyone else had to make a tough choice like that and deal with the fallout?

Read something once that said when you marry someone, you're choosing them over everyone else every single time. Your cousin crossed a line and you drew one back, that's just how it works. Family drama fades but resentment from not supporting your spouse sticks around a lot longer.

Putting your marriage first is the right call. I read a piece once that said when family attacks your spouse, not going is a clear boundary. It shows your wife she's your real family now. The fallout is hard, but it's the price for that loyalty.

It's the only way to build a new family when the old one won't behave.
