Am I the only one who actually likes when my uncle brings up politics at Thanksgiving?

Last year at my sister's place in Phoenix, he started going off about local zoning laws and somehow it shut everyone else up for once instead of the usual boring small talk. Has anyone else found a controversial topic that actually makes family dinners less awkward?

Oh man, I love it because my uncle's rants are the only thing that distracts from my terrible turkey!

Come on @dianas50, bad turkey is a tradition in itself lol. Dry bird with that weird jelly stuff from a can is what makes Thanksgiving feel real. My aunt burns the rolls every single year and we all just pile on the butter like nothing happened. Plus your uncle's rants are probably more entertaining than whatever game is on TV after dinner. Give me a lukewarm mashed potato and some family drama any day over a perfect turkey.

... and honestly I'd take a political debate over having to make small talk with my cousin about her essential oils business any day. At least when my uncle starts in on property taxes or whatever, the rest of us can just nod along and think about pie. Last year he was going on about tariffs and it was way more interesting than staring at my phone under the table. Course, my turkey usually comes out dry enough to use as a doorstop, so maybe I'm biased toward any distraction that keeps folks from focusing on the food too much.
