Vent: The way most people torque down lug nuts is just wrong
I was rotating tires on a buddy's Ford Focus last weekend and three of the lug nuts were cross-threaded so bad I had to use a breaker bar to get them off. He said he put them on with a standard socket wrench and just 'felt tight.' That's the problem right there. I see this all the time, guys using an impact gun on full blast or just guessing by feel. It warps rotors, snaps studs, and makes a simple flat tire turn into a nightmare on the side of the road. I run a small roofing outfit, so I'm used to torquing things right, but I still use a torque wrench set to the spec every time on my own truck. Has anyone else dealt with a customer's car where the lugs were torqued to like 200 ft-lbs by some shop?
