Torque wrench calibration, I used to skip it until a wheel almost came off

For like 8 years I never once sent my torque wrenches out for calibration. Figured they were fine, I mean how off could they get? Then last fall I did a brake job on a work van and the lug nuts kept feeling loose after a quick road test. Turns out my click type was reading about 15 ft lbs low. That wheel could have left the van on the highway with a family inside. Now I do a basic test with a beam style torque wrench every 3 months and send them out once a year, costs about 45 bucks each. Anyone else ever trust a wrench too long and get burned? I'm curious how common this really is.
