Took me 5 years to trust a scan tool over my ears, now I feel dumb
Back in 2019 I bought a decent Autel scanner to help with diagnostics at my shop in Columbus. I figured it was fine for reading codes but I trusted my ears and gut for finding the real problem. Had a 2014 F-150 come in with a rough idle and a slight tick. I swore it was a lifter issue, quoted the customer $1,800 for that job. He asked me to double check before he dropped that much cash. I ran the scan tool's live data and saw the fuel trims were way off on bank 2. Turned out to be a vacuum leak at the intake gasket. Fixed it for $240 and the customer still brings his trucks to me. Now I run a full scan before I listen to anything. Has anyone else had a tool change how they work, or am I the last one to catch on?
Man, that hits close to home. I wasted a whole weekend once chasing a knock on a Silverado that turned out to be a loose heat shield. My ears were confident. The scan tool saw it in two minutes.
It's not that hearing is useless. It's that our brains hear what they expect. You think lifter, you hear lifter. The data doesn't have an ego.
Now I treat my ears like the first guess, not the final answer. Cheap insurance if you ask me.
