For what it's worth, I used to roll my eyes at the whole paper towel thing too. Figured it was just old timers being set in their ways. Then my truck started losing oil and I couldn't pin it down, so I finally laid a clean towel flat and let the dipstick drip on it. The dark ring in the middle with the lighter spread around it told me more in ten seconds than weeks of guessing. Blow by has its place, sure, but that towel showed me fuel dilution and coolant seeping in that I would have missed otherwise. Call it old school if you want, but it earned its spot in my toolbox.
