Customer complaint about my torque wrench habit changed my process
Had a guy come in last month with a 2015 F-150, complained his lug nuts kept backing off after I did his brake job. I always used a torque wrench, set to spec, 150 ft-lbs. He said nah, they were loose after 200 miles. I checked everything, torque was fine. Then he mentioned he had aftermarket wheels with thin hubcentric rings. Turns out the rings were cracking. But instead of blaming him, the shop owner told me to check torque after a test drive, not just on the lift. Now I do a hot retorque on anything with aftermarket wheels. Takes 10 extra minutes, but no comebacks since. Anyone else do this or just me?

Hot retorque is the way to go, learned that the hard way myself. Aftermarket wheels are almost never the same as factory, and those thin rings shift when things heat up. I'd also add a dab of anti-seize on the hub face, not the studs, helps keep the wheel seated true. Takes me about the same time, and it catches most issues before they leave the bay, not after.
4
