An old painter in Fresno handed me a stir stick and asked if I was mixing mud or soup, and it changed how I do filler
Two weeks ago I was blocking out a quarter panel on a 2016 Civic at the shop and I was laying filler on thick, like peanut butter on toast. An old painter named Ray who rents a bay next to ours walked over, watched me stir for maybe ten seconds, and asked if I was making body mud or soup. Then he took the stick, scooped a golf ball sized amount onto my board, and spread it in one pass with a plastic spreader he pulled out of his back pocket. He kept the spreader at maybe a 30 degree angle and pressed hard and it laid down flat with almost no pinholes. Mine always had ridges and bubbles I had to chase with a cheese grater after. He said the trick is you press the filler into the metal, not smear it over the top, and you stop spreading before it starts to drag. I tried it on the next three panels and cut my sanding time by half, no joke. Anybody here still laying it on like frosting or did you all learn this in your first month?
