Tried stacking 200 shots of the moon on my phone and got a fuzzy blob with a smiley face
I clamped my phone to a cheap 70mm scope in my backyard last Friday and let the app stack 200 frames, hoping for crater detail. What came out looked like a moldy orange with what I swear is a grin near the top, turns out my mount was drifting the whole time. Anyone got a trick for keeping a phone mount steady without dropping $200 on a real tracking setup?
My buddy ran into the same drift problem with his phone setup and fixed it by hanging a small bag of sand from the tripod hook, the extra weight killed most of the shake. He also set a 3 second delay on the shutter so his hand tapping the screen didn't jiggle things. And if the app lets you, crop down to a smaller area of the frame, that way the drift moves the moon less across your stack. Took him a few tries but he finally got some decent crater shots out of a rig that cost him maybe 40 bucks total.
