The night of October 14th my backyard was so dark I could see the Andromeda galaxy with just my eyes
I live about 40 minutes outside Kansas City and usually the light glow washes out anything faint. But on the night of October 14th the power went out across our whole neighborhood after a storm, and I dragged my 8 inch dob out at 11pm with zero streetlights anywhere. I could actually spot the Andromeda galaxy as a faint smudge without any telescope, which I have never managed before in 6 years of shooting from home. I ended up taking 4 hours of subs that night and got the best M31 shot I have ever pulled off. Has anyone else had a power outage turn into a free dark sky site, or do you drive hours to get away from city glow?
