Discovered a simple flat calibration trick after messing up 20 shots of the Orion Nebula last month

I was out at a dark site in the Mojave Desert last month trying to capture the Orion Nebula. After stacking 40 frames, I had this terrible gradient across the whole image. A guy at my local astronomy club told me to take flat frames using a white t-shirt stretched over the lens instead of a fancy light panel. Did it the next night with just a phone screen and two rubber bands. Fixed the vignetting perfectly. Has anyone else found a weird DIY calibration tool that actually works?

Last time I tried a phone screen my white balance was all wrong and my stars came out blue for weeks.

Man that's rough, I feel your pain on ruining a night of data.
