Bought a $120 solar filter, forgot to check my camera lens size
I got all excited for the partial eclipse back in October and ordered a solar filter online without measuring my lens first. Turned out my camera takes a 77mm thread and the filter was for 67mm, so it just sat on the desk useless. I tried to use a step-up ring but it caused bad vignetting on every shot, totally wrecked about 40 minutes of setup time. Ended up missing the whole event because I was too stubborn to just shoot through my binocs instead. Has anyone else made this kind of sizing mistake or found a cheap adapter that actually works without softening the image?
Watched my buddy do the exact same thing last spring, ordered a 58mm filter for his 72mm lens and didn't notice until the box showed up. He grabbed a cheap step-up ring off Amazon for like 12 bucks and it worked fine, no weird blur or dark corners, just had to screw it on tight. So yeah, the ring fix is real, you just got unlucky with a bad one or maybe didn't seat it all the way.
