The guy who told me to stop using fabric softener was right after all

My neighbor Steve kept telling me for like a year that fabric softener was ruining my towels. I thought he was just being a know-it-all. Then I finally stopped using it for two months to prove him wrong, and now my towels actually soak up water instead of just pushing it around. Has anyone else had a random piece of advice like this turn out to be spot on?

Your towels actually soak up water" - same thing happened with my work shirts, the sweat just pools on top now instead of soaking in. Fabric softener is basically wax for your clothes.
