Got called out at the grocery store for grabbing bruised apples and it clicked for me
I was at the Kroger on 5th Street last Tuesday picking through the produce section. The manager walked by and saw me digging past the bruised apples to find the perfect ones. He said, 'You know those bruised ones taste just as good and they're half the price.' I looked at the sign and he was right, they were $0.99 a pound instead of $1.99. Now I always check for the 'imperfect' bins first and I save about $5 each week on fruit. Has anyone else noticed a big difference in quality between the perfect and imperfect produce?

Actually the bruised ones are better for baking too. I grab the markdown apples and make a batch of applesauce every other week. Costs like two bucks for five pounds. They get soft faster but you're cooking them anyway so who cares what they look like. Really only worth grabbing the pretty ones if you're gonna eat them raw.

Read a study a while back that said apples develop more antioxidants when they get bruised, so you're basically getting a health boost with the discount. The taste difference is mostly in your head unless the bruise is really bad and mushy. Grabbing the imperfect ones is a solid hack, just cut around any soft spots and you're good.
