Got a flat tire on I-35 in Austin and learned to keep a real spare

Back in 2019 I was driving home from a job site near Round Rock and hit a pothole that just shredded my tire. I pulled over thinking I had a donut spare in my trunk, but nope, my car only came with a fix-a-flat kit and a compressor. That spray stuff did nothing for a sidewall tear, and I ended up stuck for almost 3 hours waiting for a tow truck. After that I went out and bought a full-size spare wheel and tire for $120 from a salvage yard. Now I always keep it in my trunk and check the pressure every oil change. Has anyone else had a car that came without a real spare and found out the hard way?

Honestly that's such a common thing now with new cars and it drives me crazy. It's like everything is designed to save a buck until you're stuck on the side of the road paying for it later.

@danielb43 nailed it - everything's getting stripped down till you're stranded.
