Am I the only one who thinks it's fair to split the repair bill after my dishwasher leaked on my downstairs neighbor?
Last Tuesday my 8 year old dishwasher line popped and sent water through the floor into Mrs. Alvarez's kitchen ceiling. I called a plumber in Austin who charged me $180 for the fix plus another $400 for the drywall guy. My neighbor wants me to pay her whole $900 hardwood sanding bill, but her floors were already 12 years old. Part of me says I caused the damage so I should just write the check. The other part says normal wear on old floors isn't all on me. Where do you all draw the line on stuff like this?
Oh man, that is such a tricky spot to be in! I actually read a thing a while back about how insurance handles this stuff, and they factor in the age of the floor, like they subtract for wear and tear instead of paying full price for brand new floors. So a 12 year old floor is not worth the same as a new one, and you shouldn't have to pay to make her floors better than they were before. Maybe split it based on what her floors were actually worth, not the full sanding bill.
