Two years of Tuesday morning meetings in Tempe, and half the room still can't say what they do in one sentence
When I joined this Tuesday group in Tempe two years ago, 8 of the 14 people could explain their business in one clear sentence, and now only 4 can because the rest keep adding side gigs and new offers. The ones who got sharper write it down once and never change it, while the ones who got muddier chase every hot lead that walks in the door. Is a strict one-liner rule helping a networking group or slowly killing it?
Watched the same thing happen in a BNI group I was in for three years. The folks who kept it tight stuck to one sentence and just changed the words when their focus shifted, like a realtor who dropped "and insurance" after six months because it confused everyone. The ones who piled on offers ended up being the people nobody referred, because you can't send someone a lead if you don't know what they actually do. What saved our group was a rule that your one-liner had to survive a stranger test: say it to someone outside the room and see if they can repeat it back. Four people passing that test out of fourteen is rough, but it tells you the group cares more about looking busy than being clear. The rule is not the problem, letting people break it without saying anything is.
