Serious question, is the Scottsdale Chamber mixer actually worth the $30?

I went to my first Scottsdale Chamber networking event last Thursday at that new coffee shop off Camelback. Paid $30 at the door and honestly spent 20 minutes just trying to find someone who wasn't already in a tight group conversation. The coffee was good but I only swapped cards with 2 people the whole hour. Has anyone else had better luck there or am I just hitting the wrong events?

Paid $30 for a Chamber mixer a few months back and had almost the exact same problem. It's like everyone shows up with their pre-planned circle of people they already know and you're just kinda standing there. I've noticed this with a lot of events lately, not just networking stuff. People get so locked into their own group they forget to actually mix.

My friend Jen went to the same mixer series last spring and her experience was even worse. She paid her $30, grabbed a nametag, and then literally stood next to the pastry table for 45 minutes because nobody approached her. She finally tried to join a group of three women talking about their kids' soccer teams and one of them just kinda turned her back mid-sentence. Jen is super outgoing too, that's the thing. She said the only person who talked to her was the barista asking if she wanted more coffee. She hasn't gone back since and now just does free happy hours with industry friends instead.
