Hot take: the Antikythera mechanism had at least 30 bronze gears and I can't stop thinking about it
I was reading a writeup from the 2021 UCL study on the Antikythera mechanism and it said researchers used X-ray imaging to count at least 30 surviving bronze gears in that thing, which is way more than I assumed for something pulled out of a shipwreck near Greece around 1901. What got me was that the front dial tracked the sun and moon while a back dial predicted eclipses, so somebody in roughly 150 BC built a hand cranked analog computer and then it sat on the sea floor for about 2,000 years. Has anyone here seen the actual fragments in Athens, and is the gear count still holding up or has newer imaging found more?
