Changed my mind on pruning oaks in summer

Old head named Jerry at the local saw shop told me to stop worrying so much about oak wilt and just prune deadwood whenever I see it. Tried his advice on a July job near Richmond and the tree bounced back way faster than my usual dormant season cuts. Anyone else had better luck ignoring the calendar?

I've been that guy sweating buckets in July staring at a dead branch going "but the calendar says..." while the tree laughs at me. Jerry sounds like he's been around long enough to know when book learnin' gets in the way of common sense.

Holding onto a calendar when the tree's right there telling you it's done is just stubborn. Jerry's probably seen enough seasons to know the tree doesn't care what month it is, the leaves tell the story. Book learnin' is fine but sometimes you gotta let the plant be the boss.
