A weird noise in a Maytag dryer last Tuesday made me look at the whole machine differently

I was working on a 2017 Maytag dryer in a house over in the Maplewood area, and the owner said it was making a loud thumping sound. I pulled the drum, checked the rollers, the usual stuff, and everything looked fine. It turned out to be a single, worn-out felt seal on the rear bearing that I almost missed, which made me realize I was just looking at the parts, not how they all connect and wear together. Anyone else have a simple part that ended up being the root of a weird noise?

Spot on about seeing the connections. I've had a loose wire nut in a junction box sound like a full motor bearing going bad. Makes you slow down and listen to the whole system.

A loose wire nut sounding like a bad bearing though, really? Seems a bit of a stretch to me. I've seen plenty of weird electrical noises but they always had that high pitched, sparky sound to them, not a deep rumble like a bearing. Maybe it's more about being in a tight space with bad acoustics than the actual part being that loud. Still, you'd think you'd check the simple stuff first before blaming the motor, right?

A LOOSE WIRE NUT sounded like a bad bearing? That's actually wild. I would have torn the whole motor apart looking for that. It's crazy how a tiny, cheap part can make such a huge, expensive-sounding noise.
