That panel swap at Anime Midwest made me see voice actors differently

I went to Anime Midwest back in June and sat in on a VA panel with about 40 other people. The actress talked about how she records her lines standing up, not sitting, because it changes her breathing and pitch. It sounds dumb but I tried it at home with a random dub and my delivery actually sounded more alive. Has anyone else messed with their recording setup after hearing something like that?

Man, that's wild you brought that up. I read this interview with a veteran anime VA once, and she said the same thing about standing. Said she basically treats the booth like a stage, not an office. She also mentioned putting a mirror in front of her, so she can see her own face while she acts. Said it stops her from making lazy facial expressions that you can hear in the voice. Tried it myself with a game dub, and it's honestly a game changer. You don't realize how much you slouch or slump when you're just sitting there reading lines. The standing thing plus the mirror, it forces you to actually perform instead of just talking at the mic.

ngl I used to think the mirror thing was kinda gimmicky. Like, why would looking at yourself help? But after trying it once for a quick dub session, it totally clicked. @danielmason that standing bit is what got me, cause I always figured sitting was fine if you had good mic technique. But once I stood up and caught myself in the mirror, I could see how dead my face was. It's wild how much your body language comes through in your voice, even if you think you're just reading lines. Now I'm lowkey mad I didn't figure this out sooner, cause it makes every take feel way more real.
