Showerthought: people keep saying the original Dragon Ball is skippable and I think that is just wrong
I rewatched the first 13 episodes on a whim last week and realized most of the people who tell new fans to jump straight to Z have actually never gone back to watch the Pilaf stuff themselves. The tone is totally different, Goku is a kid learning how the world works, and the humor lands way better than the later screaming matches do. Did anyone else here actually start with the original series first, or did you all get pulled in through Z like I did back in middle school?
I mean the Pilaf saga is only like 13 episodes but the "original Dragon Ball" people argue about skipping is the whole 153 episode run, and a big chunk of that is the Red Ribbon Army arc which drags pretty hard in places. I started with Z too back in the day, but when I went back the stuff that really hooked me was the 22nd Budokai and King Piccolo arcs, not so much the early gag episodes where Goku is just confused about everything. The humor is great but it's a slow build before the show finds its footing, so telling new fans "just watch all of it" can backfire if they bounce off the first 20 episodes.
