I finally watched the 'One Piece' anime after only reading the manga for years

I was a manga purist for a decade, thinking the anime's pacing was too slow. Then my friend in Chicago made me watch the 'Wano' arc, specifically the episode where Zoro uses his new sword technique. The animation and music added so much weight that the still pages just couldn't match. Now I'm going back to watch all the big fights. Has anyone else switched from one format to the other and been totally surprised?

Wait, you skipped the whole anime for a decade? I can't even imagine... what about Luffy's first Gear Second reveal, or the Going Merry's funeral? The music alone in those scenes makes me tear up every time. You really missed out on the sheer impact of those moments moving and with sound.

Yeah, the "reading in black and white" thing from xena373's friend is exactly it. I caught up on the anime later and it's a different beast. The silence in the manga for Gear Second is cool, but the anime's sound design and score just build this pressure that finally pops. You don't get the same physical feeling from a page turn. The Merry's funeral is brutal either way, but the music does most of the heavy lifting to break you.

Remember my buddy who only read the manga? He finally watched the Water 7 arc last year and called me sobbing. Said hearing "Dear Friends" during the Merry's goodbye hit him like a truck, and he felt like he'd been reading in black and white the whole time.
