Got into a debate with my buddy about sub vs dub for old school anime
I used to swear by dubbed anime for shows like Cowboy Bebop but lately I've been watching subs and noticing way more nuance in the voice acting. My friend says dubs capture the emotion better for action scenes, what do you think handles classic series better?

Oh man, I feel that debate in my bones, especially since my Japanese is so bad I thought a character was swearing when they were actually ordering ramen. For old school stuff like Cowboy Bebop, the dub nailed the cool factor, but I've caught way more emotional beats in subs for series like Evangelion where the original actors hit different textures. Your buddy's not wrong about action scenes hitting harder in dub, but honestly I just flip a coin and pretend I know what I'm talking about either way.

Four episodes in and I'm just trying to figure out who's talking half the time, so I'm not sure it matters that much. Seems like making a big deal out of something you'll forget five minutes later anyway.

Flip a coin and pretend you know what you're talking about is basically the whole anime experience summed up honestly. At least with dubs you can't mishear a dramatic line as a grocery list.
