A veteran tech named Sal in Tampa convinced me to run 22/4 on every keypad drop and I finally get why
I used to just run 4 conductor to keypads because that is what the box had and I was trying to save a few bucks per job. Sal ran a one man shop out of Tampa for 30 years and he kept telling me to always pull 22/4 even on basic keypads. Last month on a two story in Clearwater I needed a second zone wire for a glass break and that spare pair saved me from fishing a new line through finished drywall. Anyone else pulling extra pairs just in case or am I wasting wire at this point?
Sal was RIGHT and I learned that lesson the hard way too. Did a keypad on a finished wall last year where the homeowner wanted a motion added right next to it, and that spare pair made it a 10 minute job instead of a drywall patch. Pulling the extra wire costs almost nothing compared to an hour of fishing and patching.
