Wrote off AI music tools for 2 years, then a guy at my bar played me a track made in 20 minutes
Two years ago I messed around with one of those AI song generators and it spat out this cheesy carnival sounding garbage, so I swore off the whole thing and told people it was a toy. Last Tuesday this regular named Marcus, a retired session drummer who's been playing since he was 12, pulls up a track on his phone during a slow shift and asks me who I think played the horns. I guessed some New Orleans session crew. It was an AI tool, done in about 20 minutes, and the horn parts had real phrasing and breath in them, not that stiff MIDI robot stuff I remembered. He said he'd been feeding it his own drum loops and it was writing bass lines around them, and he's using it on real gigs now. I sat there kinda annoyed because I'd been so sure this stuff was a gimmick. Curious if anyone here has used these tools with actual recorded instruments, because I want to know if it holds up outside a phone speaker.
