My friend Dana built a pull out spice drawer last spring because her husband kept shoving the jars in the cabinet and she could never find the cumin. She spent one Saturday on it, just some cheap wood strips and a few small screws, and now every jar sits at an angle so you can read the label from above. Her husband thought it was a waste of a weekend until he cooked chili and found everything in about four seconds. Last month two people at her cookout asked her to build them one, so who is the dumb one now. Your brother in law probably just can't picture it, because a spice rack is one of those things that sounds silly until you live with a messy cabinet every day. Build the thing you want, it's your kitchen.
