My bank account went from a steady $200 cushion to a constant $5 overdraft fee cycle in about 8 months

I got a small raise at work last year and thought I was set, so I let my budget slide a bit. I started saying yes to more takeout, didn't track my gas spending, and let a few subscriptions roll over. The change wasn't overnight, but by month six I was checking my balance every morning with a pit in my stomach. The real killer was the $35 fee every time I went under, which happened twice in October. I had to call and beg them to reverse one, which they did, but it was humiliating. I'm now using a basic spreadsheet to write down every single dollar I spend, which feels like homework but it's working. Has anyone else dug out of a similar fee spiral, and how long did it take you to feel secure again?

That "pit in your stomach" morning check is way too real. Been there, done that, bought the overpriced coffee that caused the overdraft. For me it was the "small treat" logic that bled me dry. Took a solid three months of eating what was already in my pantry to break the cycle. The spreadsheet is boring but it works, feels like getting a report card for being an adult.

My bank app sends a low balance alert at 7am, brutal way to start the day. I switched to a cash envelope for coffee, just twenty bucks every Monday. Forces you to actually see the money leave.

Ugh that morning alert is the WORST. So you're saying the cash envelope actually made you buy less coffee overall, not just track it? Like did you start skipping days or making it at home more? I tried the envelope thing for lunches and it was a huge shock how fast it went.
